National Mall Goes Dark

Pepco makes repairs to underground line

The usually illuminated National Mall went dark Friday night. The power was intentionally cut by PEPCO around midnight in order to make some emergency repairs to a damaged power line near the Lincoln Memorial.

The underground line was struck Thursday night while crews were installing a water line near the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.

In addition to the lights at the memorials, many of the street lights and traffic signals in the area went dark.

PEPCO restored power around 3:30 Saturday morning.
