Ex-Mt. Rainier “Officer of the Year” Pleads Guilty

Officer pleads guilty on attempted murder charges from July shooting

A former "Officer of the Year" from Mount Rainier pleaded guilty to attempted murder charges Monday.

Gene Gillette, 27, was indicted after a shooting at his home in Capitol Heights, Md., in July.

Gillette shot a man several times using his service weapon, investigators said.

Prosecutors said Gillette lured a man to his home and shot him after the man resisted Gillette's sexual advances.

The victim's father said the victim was walking down the street when Gillette approached him and invited him to a party at Gillette’s house on Glacier Avenue. Gillette allegedly promised there'd be girls there and they'd make movies. Gillette offered a ride and the victim accepted, but when they got there, no party was in progress and there were no girls, the victim's father said.

Gillette gave the victim alcohol and touched his genitals, the father said. The victim ran from the house and tried to use Gillette’s vehicle to get away, but Gillette pistol-whipped him and shot him twice, the victim's father said.

His sentencing is scheduled for mid-January.
