Mother, Daughter Drown in Prince William County Lake

A mother and daughter who drowned in Lake Montclair Thursday night have been identified.

Police said the bodies of Grace Darlene Shields, 40, and Raina Alexandra Shields, 6, were pulled from the lake early Friday morning by the Prince William County SCUBA team. Divers discovered the bodies in the water close to the dock after the two were reported missing Thursday night.

Neighbor Katherine Tkac discovered the woman's other daughter, a 9-year-old, screaming near the walkway to the lake around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Tkac took the girl, who has a developmental disability that made communication impossible, back to her home in the 15500 block of Royal Crescent Court to wait for her family to return.

"They didn't come back, I mean I didn't know they were missing," Tkac said.

When the mother didn't return, Tkac called police, and a door-to-door and aerial search was conducted without success. The dive team was called in Friday morning to search the lake.

Neighbors said Shields, a military reservist, had just moved to the Montclair neighborhood in May. The father of the children is serving in the military in Korea and has been notified of the drownings.

The 9-year-old girl will remain with Child Protective Services until a family member can assume care.
