President Barack Obama officially endorsed Maryland’s same-sex marriage law Thursday.
The president’s reelection campaign issued a statement in support of Question 6, according to The Baltimore Sun.
While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the president believes in treating everyone fairly and equally, with dignity and respect," said Obama for America spokesman Frank Benenati. "Maryland’s same-sex marriage law would treat all Maryland couples equally, and that is why the president supports Question 6.”
The president was also in a radio ad in the state in support of marriage equality. The ad features a clip of Obama’s public announcement in May that he supports same sex-marriages. While Obama originally said he is in favor of same-sex marriages in May, Monday marks the first time he has given his support to state referendums on the matter.
He also endorsed similar marriage equality laws up for vote in Maine, Maryland and Washington state.
