Flood Warnings in D.C. Area

When you felt that humidity in the air today, you might have assumed we were going to get another round of storms.

The National Weather Service issued several thunderstorm warnings for D.C. and its suburbs Friday evening.

A flash flood warning for the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church and Arlington and Fairfax counties in Virginia expires at 10:45 p.m. A flash flood warning for D.C. and Prince George's County, Md., expires at 10:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service initially issued a flash flood watch from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. for Baltimore and Harford, Baltimore, Carroll, Montgomery, Howard, Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties in Maryland. The soil was already saturated from recent rounds of storms, so residents were warned that heavy rainfall could cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, drainage areas and low-lying areas.

Several severe thunderstorms reported in Virginia and Maryland Friday afternoon produced frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, heavy rain that limits visibility to less than a mile and causes ponding on roadways, and the possibilities of wind gusts to 50 mph hail.

The storms reached the D.C. area by about 5 p.m. and will remain through the evening, News4 Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer said. They are followed by a frontal boundary that will come in overnight.

Drivers should avoid roadways covered by water, as flood waters are usually deeper than they appear and most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Just one foot of water is enough to sweep a car off the road.

And remember, if you can hear thunder, it is close enough that you could be struck by lightning.

Saturday will be dry with high temperatures around 90 degrees. There is a 50 percent chance of rainy weather again Sunday.
