Mooney Won't Run for Congress in Maryland's 6th District

Bartlett running for 11th term

It looks like Republicans are lining up behind incumbent U.S. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett in Maryland.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Maryland Republican Party Chairman Alex Mooney said he would not run in the race, and endorsed Bartlett instead.

Bartlett, 85, has held the 6th District seat since 1992.  Mooney had mulled a campaign for the seat, amid talk that the octogenarian Bartlett might step down.  But Bartlett’s fundraising efforts have been strong, and Mooney chose to defer to the incumbent.

The AP reports newly redrawn district lines could give Bartlett problems this year.  The 6th District now includes more of traditionally Democratic Montgomery County.
