Montgomery County Giving Pedestrians More Time to Cross Streets

A huge effort is under way in Montgomery County to make the streets safer for pedestrians by giving them more time at crosswalks.

Ahmed Mohammed, who says he uses public transportation so he walks often, said there simply isn't enough time to get from one side to the next in a lot of places, especially in downtown Silver Spring.

So Montgomery County is retiming all 800 signalized intersections to give more time to get across.

Over the past couple of years the federal guidelines changed for how long it should take for people to get across intersections. It used to be for every one second, pedestrians would travel about 4 feet. Now the federal government says for every one second we're actually traveling about 3-and-a-half feet.

The county is about halfway through retiming all of its signals.
