Investigators are "fairly confident" that skeletal remains found on a Virginia farm are those of a Virginia Tech student who vanished after attending a Metallica show in Charlottesville.
An autopsy will be conducted to confirm that the remains are those of Morgan Harrington, State Police Superintendent Steve Flaherty said. Police told Harrington's parents about the discovery earlier Tuesday and they headed to Albemarle County.
State Police have not confirmed the identity as Harrington but said evidence strongly suggests it's her, NBC29 reported.
The partially skeletal remains were discovered at about 9 a.m. Tuesday on the Anchorage Farm by owner David Bass, who told The Associated Press he was feeding his cattle at the time and saw the remains from his tractor. It appeared to be the body of a young woman with long blonde hair wearing dark clothing.
Crime scene technicians searched the farm for evidence with a grid mapping technique, NBC29 reported.
Harrington went to the Metallica concert at the University of Virginia on Oct. 17, about 10 miles from the farm where the remains were found. She became separated from her friends after she left the concert arena and was denied re-entry. She told them she would find a way home but hasn't been heard from since.
She was last seen wearing a black T-shirt with "Pantera" across the front in tan letters, a black mini skirt, black tights and black knee-high boots.
