Transit officials ask board for new rail cars

WASHINGTON -- Metro wants to buy a lot of new rail cars.

Officials plan to ask the Metro Board to approve the purchase of 648 new rail cars Thursday.

Metro also wants to overhaul 100 older cars.

The project will cost an estimated $2 billion, according to the Washington Post. It is tied to the proposed Metrorail extension to Dulles International Airport.
