Metro to Cut Over 100 Jobs; More Cuts May Be Coming, Sources Say

Metro is eliminating more than 100 positions on Friday as part of an aggressive move to help balance the agency's massive budget shortfall, sources tell News4.

The positions impacted include both management and employees represented by a union.

Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld hinted in recent days about tough decisions coming because of a $275 million budget gap for the next fiscal year.

In an email to employees sent Friday, Wiedefeld discussed difficult decisions that are needed to balance the budget, according to a Metro source.

Wiedefeld made it public that he intends to slash a total of 500 positions from the transit agency as part of a budget-balancing move -- but a source close to him said even more than the original 500 positions could be eliminated.

Affected employees who are represented by a union may be able to apply for other jobs within the transit agency.

Metro sources told News4 this is the beginning of what will be a hard couple of days dealing with the transit agency's budget shortfall.

A Metro representative confirmed that the general manager is keeping all options to balance the budget on the table, including fare increases, service reductions, more positions eliminated and increased contributions from local jurisdictions.
