Metro Memorial Honors Fallen Workers

There were a mixture of tears and smiles as Metro unveiled Monday a memorial for employees who lost their lives on the job.

A 12-foot tall, polished granite pylon was installed at the Metro Center Station in Northwest. Inscribed are the names of 26 employees killed while working for Metro over the past 35 years.

The base of the memorial reads: “Dedicated to those Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority employees who lost their lives in the line of duty.” The base is the same gray granite used on the edge of Metro station platforms.

Metro said the memorial is a permanent tribute to their workers' sacrifice.

Family members said they hope it will help provide a place of closure. Some who attended the unveiling ceremony stayed afterward to trace the names of their loved ones.

The memorial is located on the Metro Center mezzanine near the entrance at 12th and F streets.
