Metro: Fare Machine Problem Resolved

Metro says a problem that kept riders from using credit and debit cards at fare machines for hours has been resolved.

On Monday morning, Metro tweeted that some fare machines were not accepting credit cards. Later, Metro said machines couldn't accept debit cards, but customers could use credit cards for transactions smaller than $20. Metro advised customers to use cash.

By the evening rush, Metro said in a statement that the problem was resolved. The transit agency said "an equipment malfunction'' meant most vending machines couldn't accept debit or credit cards. It said online transactions were affected too.

Metro spokeswoman Morgan Dye told The Washington Post late Monday afternoon that the agency had not pinpointed the cause of the malfunction.
