Men Killed in Motorcycle Crashes in Alexandria, Rockville

Two men have died after two separate motorcycle crashes Thursday in Alexandria, Virginia and Rockville, Maryland.

Thomas Jefferson Duty IV, 45, died after his motorcycle crashed on Telegraph Road near Beulah Street, Fairfax County police said. Officials were called to the scene at 7:50 p.m.

Duty's 2009 Harley Davidson went onto a sidewalk and into a wall, police said. The rider was injured and later died.

The reason for the crash was not known immediately. A portion of Telegraph Road was temporarily closed.

Joseph Jones III, 26, died in the second crash Thursday, on I-270 near W. Montgomery Avenue (Route 28). Police were called to the scene about 11:10 p.m.

Jones, of Rockville, was riding a 2014 Suzuki GSX-R1000 "at a high rate of speed" when he made an "abrupt and unsafe lane change," crossing all four lanes of I-270 northbound in an apparent attempt to move from the main lanes to the local lanes, Maryland State Police said.

He hit the guardrail on the right shoulder and was thrown off the motorcycle.
