Md. Man Gets 47 Years for Slaying of 95-Year-Old WWII Vet

A man convicted of stabbing his 95-year-old neighbor last year likely will spend the rest of his life in prison.

A Montgomery County judge sentenced 62-year-old Eric Dyson to 47-and-a-half years in prison.

In May, a jury convicted Dyson of second-degree murder in the February 2015 death of Dan Belvin at the Randolph Village Apartments, a senior living facility in Colesville, Maryland, where they both lived.

Prosecutors said Dyson killed Belvin for money, making multiple withdrawals totaling more than $5,000 from Belvin's bank accounts after the murder.

Dyson was captured on store video surveillance using the cards, according to charging documents. He also had Belvin's identification, authorities said.

Dyson claimed he performed sexual favors for the victim but stabbed him due to unwelcome sexual advances, police said.

Witnesses said he used the money to fuel a drug binge, according to the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office.

“To stab a 95-year-old man over 50 times so you can get high is utterly unforgivable, but further still to besmirch a man’s reputation by claiming he sexually abused you adds insult to injury,” State’s Attorney John McCarthy said.

Belvin was a World War II Navy pilot and Korean War veteran.
