Md. Lawmakers Get 15 Percent Pay Hike

Maryland lawmakers will receive a 15.7 percent pay raise over the next four years.

WBAL-TV reports that a salary commission recommended the increase, which will take effect automatically. A Republican resolution to stop the pay hikes is going nowhere.

Legislators currently make $43,500 for their part-time jobs. The increases will bring their salaries to $50,330.

House Minority Whip Kathy Szeglia says she doesn't think it's appropriate for lawmakers to take a pay raise given the state of the economy.

Maryland lawmakers' salaries rank 13th in the nation. They also get about $140 a day for meals and lodging during the session.
