Maryland Renaissance Festival Kicks Off

The Maryland Renaissance Festival in Annapolis kicked off Saturday for nine weekends of medieval-style food, drinks and entertainment.

King Henry VIII himself will oversee the festivities, which include knights jousting in full armor, bards strumming lutes, and daredevils swallowing swords on Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 22, as well as Labor Day.

Adult tickets cost $19 through Sept. 10 and then will go up to $25 when crowds come for peak season. Children younger than 7 can get in for free on any weekend, and tickets can be purchased in advance online.

The festival will kick off every morning at 9:45 a.m. with a gate opening ceremony.

Organizers say that every ticket holder will get access to stage performances, jousting, street entertainment and tavern performances. There will also be food for sale, which of course includes 1-pound turkey legs, a fresh seafood bar and funnel cake. Organizers say food sales are cash only, so plan to visit an ATM beforehand.

A limited number of costumes are avaliable for rent, according to the festival’s website.
