Maryland Girl Named Finalist in Google Doodle Contest

A Maryland girl's high-flying doodle has landed her a spot in the next round of Google's "Doodle 4 Google" competition.

Shashi Arnold, a fifth grader at East Silver Spring Elementary School in Montgomery County, is one step closer to having her art featured on Google's homepage for a day and taking home a $30,000 college scholarship. This year's contest challenged young artists from grades K-12 to invent something that could make the world a better place.

Arnold's drawing features a sunny sky and three people flying among the clouds in cardboard boxes. Arnold says she often uses her imagination to pretend she is flying, with a cardboard box becoming her plane.

"You must admit, it would be pretty cool if our transportation was fueled by imagination because pollution wouldn't be so bad...," the East Silver Spring Elementary School fifth grader wrote.

As a state winner, Arnold has already won a trip to Google headquarters in California for an awards ceremony, an Android tablet and a t-shirt featuring her drawing.  But the grand prize is still up for grabs, and you can help her win it.

The public can vote for their favorite doodle until May 9. A grand prize winner and four national finalists will be selected from those students.

The grand prize winner's school will also receive a $50,000 Google for Education grant towards the establishment or improvement of a computer lab or technology program.
