Families seeking fall fun will soon be able to see a popular cartoon character come to life at Maryland Sunrise Farm in Gambrills.
The farm, formerly owned by the United States Naval Academy, is celebrating Curious George’s 75th birthday by using the children’s book and television show as the inspiration for its 8 acre corn maze, located at 100 Dairy Lane, Gambrills, Maryland. The maze debuts on Sept. 23 and runs through Oct. 29. It will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Maryland Sunrise Farm is a member of the MAiZE family, which licensed the Curious George theme from Universal Pictures, said Marian Fry, a partial owner of the farm.
MAiZE created its first maze in 1996 with a modified weed whacker, according to their website. After over 20 years of trial and error, the process is now more efficient, with the use of computer design programs and tractors.
Brett Herbst, founder of MAiZE Inc., said that after creating nearly 3,000 mazes from corn fields, they have reduced the time it takes to cut the corn down to only half of a day.
MAiZE helps design and market the maze, and it also helps cut the patterns into the corn, Herbst said.
He said they facilitate the mazes in almost every state, and in parts of Canada, noting the hardest part is helping the local farms decide on design ideas.

Herbst said his favorite part of the process has always been seeing attendees enjoy the creations.
"People get to interact and compete with each other, deciding which direction they should go," he said.
Most of the mazes operated by MAiZE are able to reuse the corn for to feed cattle once the mazes close for the season, Herbst said.
Admission prices at MD Sunrise Farm range from $6 to $12 and will include access to the short and long versions of the maze, corn hole games, and other activities. Pony rides, a petting zoo and food vendors will be available for an additional cost.
