Maryland Congressional Candidate Being Treated for Cancer

David Trone, the co-owner of the national wine store chain Total Wine & More who is running for Congress in Maryland, said Monday he is being treated for localized cancer after a tumor was found in his urinary tract, and the next step in his treatment is to have a kidney removed.

Trone announced the tumor was confirmed June 25 — a day before Maryland's primary, which Trone won to be the Democratic nominee in the state's 6th Congressional District in western Maryland. Trone said he has undergone chemotherapy treatment at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, which he said "has led to a substantial reduction in the size of the tumor."

"The next step in the recommended course of treatment is to remove the kidney on that side of my urinary tract," Trone said in a statement. "The treatment team members believe my prognosis is positive.  They say I may miss a few days of the campaign immediately after the surgery, but nothing will interfere with my being fully engaged as a candidate and as a member of Congress after the recovery."

Trone added: "I am confident I will make a full recovery."

The tumor was found after an abnormal lab result at the time of Trone's annual physical exam, Trone said. That led doctors to conduct additional tests.

In a news release, Trone included comments from Dr. Phillip Pierorazio, of the Brady Urological Institute and Department of Urology at Johns Hopkins, and the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

"David's prognosis is excellent," Pierorazio said. "He is being treated for a localized cancer of the genitourinary system with chemotherapy and planned surgery. The cancer is localized, and the treatment has been aggressive."

Pierorazio also noted that Trone's underlying health is strong.

"We expect David to fully recover, to return as an active candidate, and, if elected, to carry out all of the duties of a member of the House of Representatives."

Trone, who defeated seven other candidates in the Democratic primary, is running in Maryland's only open congressional seat this year. Rep. John Delaney, a Democrat, is running for president. Trone is running against Republican Amie Hoeber.
