A man has died after he was shot early Friday in Silver Spring, police said, turning the shooting investigation that roped off an apartment parking lot into a homicide investigation.

Montgomery County police say officers responded about 3:05 a.m. to the 8500 block of 16th Street for reports of a shooting. That's about a half-mile away from downtown Silver Spring.

The victim, identified as Nathaniel Potts, 29, of Silver Spring, was found with an apparent gunshot wound and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Potts died later that day, police announced just after noon on Wednesday.

Further information about a potential suspect was not available. The incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

Police roped off an apartment building’s parking lot during the investigation Friday morning, and a black sedan was loaded onto a tow truck and taken away as evidence.

"[It's] very, very scary," said one woman who lives in the apartment complex. "Because we have children, and it's a residential area."

"This scares me," said resident Rich Gordon. He and his dog Georgie use the dog-walking enclosure -- located right next to the parking lot where the shooting took place -- frequently.
