Virginia Man Killed in Robbery in D.C. Just Ahead of Anniversary

A man died after being attacked and robbed by two men in Washington, D.C., Sunday.

Thomas Harris and his sister drove into the city to buy crabs and fireworks about 5 p.m. Sunday. As his sister waited in the car, two men jumped Harris on New York Avenue and beat him with what his sister said was a baseball bat.

The attackers also robbed Harris before running away, police said.

A witness tried to help, but it was too late. Harris sustained a blow to the head that fractured his skull. He died the next day.

Harris was married, and his sister was left to tell his wife, Mindaluz Harris, the news. She was shocked that anyone would attack her husband.

"He is a tall guy and he knows how to defend himself," she said.

Their anniversary would have been later this month, and Mindaluz Harris said she wants her husband to be remembered as the friendly guy he was.

"He was always joking," she said. "When he's outside, he talks with everybody."

Police are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.
