A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to firing shots at an unmarked van full of police officers last year.
Plainclothes officers were operating out of an unmarked burgundy minivan as part of a robbery intervention program last January in the 1600 block of Montello Avenue NE.
Just after 7 p.m, officers say they spotted two suspects behaving suspiciously. As police began to drive toward the two men, one of the suspicious men opened fire, blasting one bullet into the vehicle. Several other bullers hit houses across the street.
No one was injured.
Shawn Gray fled the scene on foot, but was caught hiding under vehicle, parked a short distance from the crime scene. Police were also able to recover the gun and seven shell castings on the scene.
At the time of the incident, Gray was on release for a 2009 conviction of carrying a pistol without a license.
Gray pleaded guilty to a D.C. charge of assault with a deadly weapon and a federal charge of possession of a firearm Wednesday, and could face between 8 and 10 years behind bars when he's sentenced in July.
