Man Pleads Guilty to Setting Girlfriend on Fire at DC Motel

A man has pleaded guilty to setting his girlfriend on fire at a D.C. Motel earlier in the year.

Joseph Hammond plead guilty on Tuesday to one charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Hammond set the victim on fire on May 3 at a Motel 6 on Fourth Street NE, according to a statement from D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo. The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Maggiolo said.

Firefighters responded to the scene and fire investigators processed evidence and interviewed witnesses, Maggiolo said. Hammond was arrested a few days later on May 9.
