Man Killed by Fire Truck in Stafford County, Va.

Fire truck's siren and lights were activated at the time of the accident

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Stafford County fire truck while crossing a six-lane road.

The victim has been identified as 69-year-old John Whitehurst of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Whitehurst wasn't using a crosswalk when he tried to cross a darkened section of the road Friday evening, said Stafford County Sheriff's Office spokesman Bill Kennedy.

The fire truck was responding to an accident on Interstate 95. Police said the driver was unable to to avoid him.

Whitehurst later died at a local hospital.

Kennedy said in a news release that the fire truck's siren and lights were activated at the time of the accident. The driver has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
