Man Killed by Bus on National Mall Dove In Front of It, Police Say

A man who was fatally struck by a bus on the National Mall intentionally threw  himself in front of the vehicle, police say. 

The victim has been identified as a 39-year-old man from Springfield, Virginia. 

The OmniRide Bus driver told police he was driving past the National Museum of African American History and Culture when the man yelled something and dove in front of the bus.  

The driver stopped the bus and called 911. 

Medics arrived minutes later, but the man already had died. 

The OmniRide Bus involved in the crash was operated by the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC), which serves Prince William County.

"PRTC expresses its deepest condolences to the pedestrian’s family," the company said in a statement.

No passengers on the bus were hurt.
