Neighbors Shaken After Murder, Rape on Md. Trail

Neighbors are on edge after police have reported an armed rape and a murder along a Maryland trail within a week.

Akinleye Warner, a 19-year-old graduate of High Point High School, was found stabbed to death on the Northwest Branch trail Saturday night, near the 1500 block of Quebec Street in Langley Park.

Maryland-National Capital Park Police say officers responded to the report of an unconscious man. They found Warner with stab wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

About two miles from the stabbing and a week prior, a woman in her 20s was raped at knifepoint. Her attacker has since been arrested and charged.

"It makes me wonder what the world is getting to," one bike rider told News4.

The Northwest Branch Trail winds for miles through College Park, Adelphi and Silver Spring.

Neighbors tell News4 they see many people using the trail after the sun sets.

"I probably won't walk here at night... I did one time, but I probably won't do it again," a woman said.
