Man Pumping Gas Killed During Robbery in Suitland

"He was a nice young man," a longtime neighbor said

A man pumping gas in Suitland, Maryland, was shot and killed by someone who robbed him, police say.

Wayne Pope, 27, died after he was shot at the Exxon station on the 4700 block of Silver Hill Road.

"He was a nice young man," longtime neighbor Cecil Watkins said.

According to the preliminary investigation by the Prince George's County Police Department, Pope was outside his car when someone approached him.

"Detectives believe the suspect was trying to rob the victim. During that, a struggle ensued, and the suspect shot the victim, killing him," Lt. David Coleman said.

Prince George's County officers were called to the scene just after midnight Wednesday for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Pope suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the suspect is a teen or man in his 20s who had been carrying a black backpack. Anyone with information that can help police is asked to call 1-866-411-TIPS.
