Man Fatally Shot in Columbia Heights Apartment

A 20-year-old man died Tuesday after he was shot in an apartment in Columbia Heights, a block south of the neighborhood's Metro station.

Devonte Crawford was found shot in a third-floor apartment in the Columbia Heights Village Apartments on the 2900 block of 14th Street NW. Police responded about 6:30 a.m., and Crawford was pronounced dead.

Sources told News4 he had been shot in the head.

Police searched the crime scene for hours, searching for clues that could help them track down the shooter.

Neighbors said they are worried about their safety in the building, where many senior citizens live.

"Every time you turn around, there's something happening," one woman said.

Crawford's death marks the 58th homicide in D.C. this year thus far. As of the same time in 2015, 55 people had been killed.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call police at 202-727-9099. Information can be submitted anonymously by sending a text message to 50411. A reward of as much as $25,000 is offered.
