Man Dies After Shooting in Fairfax County Parking Lot

Officers responded to Jeff Todd Way and St. Gregory's Lane, in the Mount Vernon area, on Sunday morning

NBC Universal, Inc. News4’s Derrick Ward reports on the search for a shooter in a deadly parking lot confrontation.

A man was shot and killed Sunday when someone opened fire into a car in the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County, Virginia, authorities said.

Officers responded to the shooting at Jeff Todd Way and St. Gregory's Lane before 8:20 a.m. Sunday. Fairfax County police said several people, including the victim, were sitting in a car in a parking lot when a man walked up to the car.

“A confrontation occurred between the individual, now on foot, and the occupants of the vehicle, and at some point, the individual fired multiple rounds into the vehicle,” Lt. Dan Spital said.

The driver of that vehicle took the victim, whose name was not immediately released, to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and was later taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he died of his injuries, according to police.

Police said they do not believe it was a random act, and that the suspect left the scene in a silver Nissan Maxima with Maryland tags.

Residents of the Old Mill Gardens development were awakened by gunfire. They said they heard at least six shots.

“So what we’re asking is, if anybody was in this area this morning, if you heard anything, saw anything, please give us a call,” Spital said.
