Man Charged in 2016 Death of Woman Killed While Waiting for Bus

More than two years after a stray bullet claimed the life of a woman who was waiting at a Southeast Washington bus stop, police have announced an arrest in the case.

Ivy Tonett Smith, 39, was waiting at a bus stop in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue SE in March 2016 when she was shot. Two other people at the bus stop were also injured in the shooting.

On Friday, police announced that an arrest had been made in the case. Xavier Hamilton, 26, was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder while armed for his role in the shooting.

Police believe Smith was an innocent bystander. She was waiting for a bus home with a couple bags of groceries.

The mother-of-one was a graduate of Dunbar High School. She worked as a barista and in property management.
