Major Runway Overhaul at Reagan National

Officials expect minimal flight disruption

Starting Monday night, crews at Reagan National Airport will begin a major rehabilitation project on one of the main runways.

For the first time since 1990, Runway 1/19 (pictured above) which is the airport’s main North-South artery, will be completely re-milled and resurfaced.

Airport officials say the construction will be coordinated with the airlines that serve out of Reagan to ensure minimal disruption of scheduled flights. Work is expected to happen between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day.

Some major parts of the improvement include:

  • Resurfacing the entire 6,869-foot asphalt runway
  • Replacing the runway’s centerline lighting system
  • Replacing the approach lights system, including the pier in the Potomac River

During the construction, nearby Runway 15/33 will remain open for overnight flights. Airport officials say the rehabilitation and other runway improvements will run through 2011.
