LEGG MASON LAYOFFS
Money manager Legg Mason Inc. said Monday that it will cut 250 jobs in the Baltimore area — 30 percent of its local work force — in an effort to boost profits by shipping the work to affiliates around the world. Most of the layoffs will be achieved by shutting down the company's Owings Mills offices, with the rest of the job cuts at its brand-new building on the city's waterfront in Harbor East. The move will bring the company's Baltimore-area employment to about 550 — a drastic drop from just two years ago, when nearly 1,000 people worked here. (Baltimore Sun)
VIRGINIA I-95 TOLLS?
Driving between Virginia and North Carolina on Interstate 95 is free today, but it may not stay that way. Gov. Bob McDonnell has filed an application with the Federal Highway Administration to install toll booths on Interstate 95 northbound and southbound at the Virginia/North Carolina border. HOME SALES UP IN PRINCE GEORGE'S
Home sales in Prince George's County grew the fastest in the mid-Atlantic region over the past year, a new report says. Sales skyrocketed 85.6 percent in April over April 2009, according to Metropolitan Regional Information Systems in Rockville. The report covers Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia.(Gazette)
ANIMAL EUTHANASIA
After a quarter-century of working tirelessly at keeping animals alive, Springfield veterinarian Rocky Deutsch is now dedicated to sending family pets to their final resting place. In 2008, after nearly 25 years of practice, Deutsch sold his business, Burke Veterinary Clinic, to an associate. He created his own home euthanasia company, Compassionate Care Veterinary Services, so he could dedicate himself exclusively to euthanizing ailing animals. (Fairfax Times)

White House crashers Tareq and Michaele Salahi are hitting the party circuit again. They will host the International Polo Championships and Fashion Show June 12. The Salahis – former owners of Oasis Winery in Fauquier County – are the founders of America’s Polo Cup, which hosts the event.
