PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY SCHOOL BUDGET CUTS
The Prince George's County public school system could lose $35 million in state funding next year, according to a proposed budget released Wednesday by Gov. Martin O'Malley (D). "These are not easy times, and here in Maryland we haven't been immune to the national recession. Our families are struggling. Our family-owned businesses are struggling. And just as our people have to find ways to do more with less, so too must those of us in government," O'Malley said in a statement. (Gazette)

SOCCER GEAR STOLEN
The spring season could be in peril for Montgomery County's largest youth soccer program if the trailer containing tens of thousands of dollars worth of goals, nets and equipment is not returned. The 6-foot by 12-foot fully enclosed trailer on wheels was stolen around the New Year's Day holiday from the Montgomery Soccer Inc. headquarters on Standish Place near Gude Drive in Rockville. It contained about 20 goals and about 80 bags of nets, organization officials reported. (Gazette)

FORTUNE MAG TOP EMPLOYERS
Fortune magazine's latest list of the top 100 companies to work for includes firms in the D.C. metro area.Topping the 12th annual list  is NetApp out of California.  Locally, the D.C. law firm Arnold & Porter makes the list. Other Maryland, D.C. and Virginia companies on the list: CarMax in Richmond, Va.; Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean, Va.; Erickson Retirement Communities in Catonsville, Md.; MITRE in McLean, Va.; Stanley in Arlington, Va.; Marriott International in D.C.; and SRA International in Fairfax, Va.  (WTOP.com)

FORECLOSURES
For homeowners, 2008 was a year to forget.Nationwide, foreclosure filings -- default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions -- rose 81 percent last year from 2007, according to RealtyTrac, a California-based company that monitors the housing market. The company said one out of every 54 homes in the country was in some phase of foreclosure in 2008 -- about 2.3 million properties. (Fairfax Times)

HORSE INJURY DELAYED INAUGURAL PARADE
Tuesday's Inaugural Parade was delayed for nearly an hour because of an accident -- involving a horse. Brooke Vrany, director of programs and emergency services for Days End Farm Horse Rescue near Mount Airy, was on duty Tuesday in Washington with the organization's horse ambulance, ready to handle any emergencies that might befall the 217 horses participating in the parade.  (Frederick News-Post)
