Local Elections Tuesday That Could Set Stage for National Politics

All of Virginia's General Assembly seats up for grabs

The polls are open in Virginia, for a legislative election that could set the stage for next year's national races.

Election officials anticipate there may be some confusion today, as redistricting has caused polling places to close for some residents.  Notifications of the new precincts have been mailed out, and voters can find their new polling places online as well.

Before 8 a.m. Tuesday, News4 received several reports of confused voters in Prince William County, reporting to one polling place but being sent to a different location.

In Virginia, voters are deciding whether to continue with a partisan divide in the state legislature or give the Republicans absolute power with a new Senate majority.

A GOP net gain of three seats gives Republicans an outright majority and the right to dominate Senate committees where many conservative bills have traditionally been killed.

All 140 seats in the General Assembly are up for grabs.  With no statewide or national races on the ballot, voter turnout is expected to be light.

Nevertheless, News4's Megan McGrath reported that in Annandale, voters were lined up early at polling stations to cast their ballot before work.

In Maryland, polls opened this morning too.

Bowie, College Park, Gaithersburg, Greenbelt, Rockville and Takoma Park are all holding elections.

Polls open at 7 a.m., except in College Park, where polling starts at 11 a.m.

The polls at all 6 locations will close at 8 p.m.
