It has been closed for months, but the new Kalmia Road crossing reopened Friday.
The old Kalmia Road Culvert - which connected main roads to the east and west side of Rock Creek Park - was completely washed out and became unsafe.
The brand new bridge connects East and West Beach Drive, eliminating a nearly five mile long detour.
It will provide relief not only for D.C. commuters but should also relieve some of the crowding on East West Highway in Maryland.
The $2 million, three-sided structure carries the more natural stream bed, improving stream flow to prevent clogging and flooding and minimizing erosion. There's also a dedicated pedestrian walkway on the bridge.
