Juvenile Killed in Tragic Construction Accident in Northern Virginia

A juvenile died after being trapped in a ditch in Fairfax County Tuesday night, police said.

The juvenile and an adult were trapped when a ditch collapsed at a construction site on Solitaire Lane near Old Dominion Drive, in McLean, Virginia, according to Fairfax County police.

A neighbor who asked to remain anonymous was home during the accident. When she heard emergency vehicles, she went outside to learn what happened.

"It's terrible," she said. "Especially being so young and having such a long time to go and make more memories, so it's really tragic."

The site belongs to Tom Digges of Digges Development Corporation. Digges did not respond to News4's requests for comment.

A work permit shows the workers were clearing land for utilities to be installed.

Fairfax County police isn't releasing the victim's name because he was under 18 years old.

In Virginia, a person can work construction at 16 years old

Fairfax County and the state have launched investigations into the accident. The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry's Safety and Health Division has six months to investigate the accident, it told News4 in a statement.

The adult who was injured in the accident is expected to recover from his injuries.
