Jury Selection Continues in Huguely Murder Trial

In morning session, only 3 potential jurors selected

On Tuesday, jury selection continued in the trial of a UVA student accused of killing his girlfriend.

George Huguely faces first-degree murder charges in the death of Yeardley Love.

After the process extended until 8:30 p.m. Monday, jury selection was very slow in the Tuesday morning session, when only three more potential jurors were selected, bringing the total selected to 21 by midday.

Attorneys had a difficult time finding potential jurors who had not heard about the case and already formulated an opinion.

Tuesday evening, the attorneys had narrowed the potential jurors to a pool of 28. The prosecution and defense each will strike six people beginning Wednesday morning to narrow the pool to 12 jurors and three alternates. Another is expected to be dismissed because of upcoming weekend travel plans that would prevent her from participating on a Saturday if necessary.

Huguely admitted to "kicking in" Love's bedroom door, banging her head against a wall and leaving her bleeding, prosecutors say. Huguely’s defense team says it’s possible Love died from cardiac arrhythmia caused by a combination of Adderall and alcohol. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Both sides hope to have the jury selection process wrapped up Tuesday night so that opening arguments can begin Wednesday morning.
