Some D.C.-Area Events Rescheduled, Cancelled due to Nor'easter

The D.C. area will be hit by a nor'easter Friday and Saturday. The drenching rain and tough weather conditions means changes and cancellations for some events, games and schools around the area, and more could follow.

This list is being updated continually, but read on for what we know right now:

Games

Redskins: Game Is On 

The Redskins' game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon is on, despite the weather, the NFL confirmed.

UMD Football Game: Kickoff Moved

Due to adverse weather, Saturday's game against the University of Michigan will kick off at noon instead of 8 p.m., the University of Maryland announced on Thursday. 

"Our foremost priority is the safety and well-being of both teams, fans attending the game and staff," said Maryland Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson in a release.

Anderson said they wanted to schedule kickoff as early as possible "because of the unpredictable nature of Hurricane Joaquin. In addition, those participating, working and attending the game would not have to travel in the evening in potentially dangerous conditions."

Howard U. Homecoming Game: On as Scheduled

Howard University said it would play its homecoming game Saturday, even though its homecoming parade has been cancelled after a number of participants dropped out.

Stafford High School Football Game: Homecoming Game Moved 

The SHS Homecoming football game scheduled for Friday evening has been postponed until 1 p.m. on Saturday. 


Events -- Cancelled

Fort Belvoir Oktoberfest: Cancelled

The 20th annual Oktoberfest event, scheduled for Thursday though Sunday, has been cancelled.

Gaithersburg Events: Several Cancelled

The Skate Slam at the Skate Park and the Main Street Farmers Market, both scheduled for Saturday, have been cancelled. Outdoor sports are also cancelled for Saturday. Soccer/football photos have been rescheduled for Oct. 17. The miniature golf course will be closed Saturday; a decision on the course for Sunday will be made by 10 a.m. that day.

Race for Every Child: Cancelled

The Race for Every Child, scheduled for Saturday in downtown D.C., has been called off. "The Children's National staff and our partners have determined that the threat of heavy wind and rain could threaten the safety of participants," planners said Friday morning. "We are exploring future options for the event, and will be in touch with all participants by email with any updates, including when to expect your race t-shirt."

Howard U. Homecoming Parade: Cancelled

Howard's homecoming parade was cancelled after rainy, cold and windy weather led some of the parade performers to drop out of the event. The Children's Pavilion also is cancelled. All other homecoming events will go on as scheduled.

Smithsonian's Autumn Conservation Festival: Cancelled 

The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute has decided to cancel this weekend's Autumn Conservation Festival. "The safety of our visitors, staff and animals is our number-one priority," the institution said in a statement. Guests who have already purchased a vehicle pass will be contacted directly by Friends of the National Zoo with refund information.

State Fair of Virginia: Ended Early

The state fair closed at 7 p.m. Thursday and won't reopen for the remainder of the 2015 season,planners said on the fair's website. The fair had been scheduled to end Sunday.

Anyone who purchased but hadn't yet used single-day admission tickets or season passes can exchange them via mail for a single-day admission ticket for next year's fair, planners said.

Takoma Park Street FestivalCancelled

The festival was scheduled for Sunday; planners announced Friday that they've decided to cancel. "Winds, ground saturation and street conditions were considered in coordination with City of Takoma Park officials when making this decision," planners said in an email release.

Taste of Bethesda: Cancelled

A day after they said they were closely watching the weather, planners announced Thursday that Saturday's food fest was cancelled.


Events -- Rescheduled

Walk to End Alzheimer's: Rescheduled

The Walk to End Alzheimer's in Prince George's County on Saturday has been rescheduled for Oct. 10. The walk will be held at Prince George's Stadium, 4101 Crain Highway in Bowie. Registration opens at 8:30 am. and the walk begins at 10 a.m.

Alexandria Art on the Avenue: Rescheduled

The 20th Annual Art on the Avenue festival, initially set for Oct. 3, has been rescheduled to Oct. 10.  

Bikers for Babies: Rescheduled  

The 12th Annual Bikers for Babies, a motorcycle ride that raises funds to support the March of Dimes, was originally scheduled for Oct. 3 but now will be held Oct. 10.

Capitol City Brewing Company's Mid-Atlantic Oktoberfest: Rescheduled

The fest, scheduled for this Saturday in Shirlington Village, has been rescheduled for Oct. 11.

Highland Day Maryland: Rescheduled

The event, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been rescheduled for Oct. 31. "Faced with insufficient parking due [to] the loss of all our grass parking areas and a forecast of substantial rain for the entire day, the committee saw no way to stage a successful event on October 3rd. With safety as our main objective, we had to make this difficult choice," planners posted on Facebook. 


Events -- Still Happening

Fall for Fairfax: Still On

The Fall for Fairfax Kids Fest will go on as scheduled, event organizers said.

Vienna Oktoberfest: Still On  

Organizers said they have added several tents, but the Oktoberfest will go on as scheduled. 

D.C. VegFest: Still On

The event will be held rain or shine Saturday, organizers tweeted on Friday.

Taste of Georgetown: Still On

A planner for the event said Thursday afternoon that "unless something drastically changes for the worst," the event will go on Saturday as planned.


Schools

Alexandria City Schools: Field Trips, Outdoor Practice Cancelled

All Alexandria City Public School field trips and outdoor practices have been canceled beginning Friday. Indoor activities at schools for Saturday will still go on as scheduled. 

Frederick County (Maryland) Schools: Fields Closed

The school district's athletic fields will be closed until further notice.

Rappahannock County Schools: Early Dismissal 

The school district will have early dismissal at 1 p.m.

Prince George's County Schools: Outdoor Athletics Cancelled

All outdoor athletic activities are canceled Friday and Saturday.
