Jim Vance to Continue to Anchor News4 at 6; to Step Down From News4 at 11

Jim Handly to become Doreen Gentzer's co-anchor on News4 at 11

Jim Vance, who is celebrating his 46th year at NBC4, will continue anchoring for another few years.

Vance will continue to anchor News4 at 6 with Doreen Gentzler. He will also contribute stories and special reports for News4 at 11, but will step down as anchor of that newscast at the end of May.

After all those years of staying at work until midnight, Vance said he’s ready for an early bedtime.

"This has been Vance’s home since 1969, and we are beyond excited that he will be sticking around awhile," said Jackie Bradford, president and general manager of NBC4.

"Vance and Doreen have been the public face of one of the best local news teams in the country for 25 years together," News Director Mike Goldrick said. "They’re smart, professional and authentic. That’s not going to change. This team will continue to work for our viewers to deliver relevant and compelling news on every platform."

Bradford and Goldrick also announced that News4 anchor Jim Handly will become Gentzler's co-anchor on News4 at 11.

"I am humbled and thrilled to be joining my friend and colleague Doreen," Handly said. "She and Vance have established themselves as one of the truly extraordinary anchor teams in the country.

"Vance has set the highest bar in our business," Handly said. "There is only one Vance, and I’m proud to call him not only a friend, but a journalist I’ve admired and respected for decades."

News4, the D.C. market's top-rated local news, also announced that Chris Lawrence will anchor News4 at 4 alongside co-anchor Pat Lawson Muse. Handly will continue to anchor News4 at 5 alongside co-anchor Wendy Rieger.

Erika Gonzalez will anchor the weekend editions of News4 at 6 and News4 at 11, in addition to continuing as the station's consumer reporter.

Vance has been honored by many national and local journalism organizations, including being inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame and being named Washingtonian of the Year.
