Alexandria Police Department conducting investigation

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office has identified the inmate who died while in their custody Saturday night.

Diego Silva-Fuentes, 54, was being housed in the medical unit of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detection Center when he experienced a medical emergency. Silva-Fuentes of Carolina, Puerto Rico, was taken to Inova Alexandria Hospital, where he died a few hours later.

Silva-Fuentes had been held at the detention center since March 4 on federal charges. Authorities did not say what those charges were.

The Alexandria Police Department will conduct an investigation into the death, and the sheriff's office will conduct its own internal investigation.
