Increase in Homicides Rattles Residents in DC's Ward 7

Ward 7 has seen a dramatic increase in the number of homicides so far this year compared to the same period last year.

The Washington Post reports that between January 1 and May 17, 21 people were killed in Ward 7. There were seven homicides over the same period in 2015.

While the homicides have spiked in Ward 7, the overall number of deaths across the city has remained virtually the same. As of May 17, there were 45 homicides in D.C. in 2016. Last year, there were 46 over the same period.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that number of homicides in the first part of 2015 was unusually low. She says this year's numbers are similar to what they were in 2014.
