Hundreds More Unaccompanied Immigrant Children Placed in D.C. Region

Hundreds more unaccompanied immigrant children arrived in the D.C. region in the past few weeks, according to a federal report reviewed by the News4 I-Team.

More than 600 immigrant children have been placed with foster families in Maryland since July 1, according to the report. That makes it 2,800 children placed in the state since the start of the year.

Another 2,800 have been placed in Virginia since January, including hundreds this summer as a crisis at the border continues.

There's been a spike this year in gang violence and drug violence in Central America.

Children have been fleeing to the U.S. flooding emergency shelters near the border for many months.

A spokesman for the state of Maryland said one reason the state has accepted so many children is its large Salvadoran population, with whom many of these kids are being placed.
