How to Customize News Alerts in the NBC Washington App

The newest version of our app features personalized news alerts that let you select categories and topics that matter most to you.

Our latest app update allows you to select the categories of news alerts you want to get from NBC Washington on your device. We've included topics that matter most to you, based on your feedback.

You can select from Breaking News, News, Watch Live, Commuter Alert, Sports and Weather.

To personalize your notifications, first check "Allow Notifications" when you download the new app. Click on the hamburger menu and then hit the gear icon in the app. On iOS devices, select Alert Settings under Notifications. On Android devices, select Alert Settings under Alerts.

The news alert categories will automatically be on if you allowed notifications on your device. Make your selections by toggling the blue button off or on next to each topic.

Breaking News will give you alerts about the latest and most urgent stories of the day in your region, U.S. and the world.

News alerts are for non-urgent stories about important topics and issues and News4's most compelling reporting and storytelling.

Watch Live notifications will alert you to live events and newscasts.

Commuter alerts will deliver the latest information on major road closures, and crashes and mass transit problems.

Sports alerts will notify you of breaking news and important stories about the Redskins, Nationals, Wizards and Capitals, as well as local colleges and other local athletes making news.

Weather alerts from Storm Team4 will keep you up to date about severe weather, including school closings, so you can prepare in advance and stay safe during severe weather.

If you don't see these options in the app settings, make sure you have version 5.8 or later on your device.
