A widespread smuggling conspiracy -- allegedly involving 13 female corrections officers, seven inmates and five others with gang ties -- will be the subject of a May 8 hearing before the House Judiciary Committee.
Delegate Curt Anderson, a Baltimore Democrat who requested the hearing, says he wants lawmakers to hear the facts of the case and make an assessment about the state of the Baltimore City Detention system.
Federal prosecutors announced the indictments of 25 people this week for plotting to smuggle drugs, cellphones and other contraband into Baltimore's jail and other correctional facilities.
The 48-page indictment reads like a movie script, reported News4's Richard Jordan. Tavon White, jailed on a murder charge, is cast as the ringleader. White allegedly controlled the Black Guerilla Family Gang from inside the Baltimore City Detention Center.
Among other allegations, the document alleges that the ring involved sex between inmates and guards that led to four of the officers becoming pregnant.
