Virginia House GOP Denies Special Election Winner Seat

Republicans want recount of special election for resigned delegate's seat

RICHMOND, Va. -- Majority Republicans in the Virginia House of Delegates have refused to seat the Democrat who won narrowly won a special election in Alexandria.

Charniele Herring was certified Wednesday morning by the State Board of Elections as the winner of the 46th House District race by 16 votes out of 2,679 cast Tuesday.

Former Democratic Caucus chairman Brian Moran resigned the seat to run full time for governor.

Republicans, however, voted 54-41 against seating Herring pending a recount sought by defeated Republican candidate Joe Murray.

They argued that the results might be overturned by the recount and it would be improper for a delegate whose victory could be reversed to vote on legislation.
