Highway Sign Dedicated to Slain Maryland Trooper

New sign will hang on Beltway in Forestville

There is now a permanent memorial honoring the life and legacy of a slain Maryland State Police trooper on the Capital Beltway.

Family, friends, state officials and members of the Maryland State Police gathered in Forestville, Md., Wednesday to dedicate a new highway sign for Trooper First Class Wesley Brown.

A man named Cyril Williams was convicted earlier this year in Brown's death in June 2010. Prosecutors said Williams shot Brown after Brown tossed Williams out of an Applebee's for being disorderly. Brown had been off-duty, working security at the restaurant.  Williams is now serving a life sentence, without the possibility of parole.

Brown was just 24 at the time of his death. In addition to patrolling the streets and highways of Prince George's County, he served as a mentor to young men in his community. He founded the organization Young Men Enlightening Younger Men.

Brown's mother spoke at the dedication ceremony, thanking everyone for their support and prayers. Others who spoke remembered Brown as a person with integrity and a concern for everyone he served, regardless of their situations.

The new highway sign honoring Brown will be put up on I-495 in Forestville, near the barrack where he was stationed.
