Three people were hurt, including on critically, when two cars crashed into trees at a high rate of speed.
Anne Arundel County police said officers discovered two vehicles off the road at Spa Road and Harness Creek Road in Annapolis, Md., early Sunday morning. A Volkswagon Jetta and a Mazda Protégé both crashed into a tree line at that location.
Crash investigators determined both cars were traveling at a high rate of speed, one following the other, when they both lost control in a curve and struck separate trees.
The driver of the Jetta, a 17-year-old male from Annapolis, was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma and is listed in critical condition.
A passenger in the Jetta, also a 17-year-old male from Annapolis, and the driver of the Mazda, Oscar Anibal Moreira, 18, from Annapolis, were treated for minor injuries and released.
Police said excessive speed is a contributing factor in these crashes. A toxicology test result is pending and the investigation continues.
