High School Track Coach Accused of Having Sex With Student

A high school track coach in Hyattsville, Maryland, had sex with a 16-year-old student, police say.

Charles Wolford, 23, is a coach at Fairmont Heights High School and a teacher's aide at Gladys N. Spellman Elementary School in Cheverly, police said.

Wolford is accused of engaging in sexual acts in the last week with a girl he coached on the Fairmont Heights track team. Prince George's County police said they did not have sex on school grounds.

Wolford was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexual abuse of a minor, second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense/person in position of authority. He is in jail.

Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said in a news conference Wednesday that the girl's parents started having concerns and contacted the school system, which led to the investigation into Wolford.

Stawinski said the department doesn't believe there are more victims and there are currently no accusations related to Gladys N. Spellman Elementary School.

Wolford was vetted through the school system and has no prior criminal record, Stawinski said.

"Due to the nature of the claims, Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO Kevin Maxwell has recommended termination of Mr. Wolford’s employment. Behavior that brings harm to a student will not be tolerated," Fairmont Heights High School Principal Torrie S. Walker said in a letter to parents.
