A teller’s romantic husband assisted the Charles County Sheriff’s Office in apprehending a bank robber Friday morning.
A man with a knife and wearing a motorcycle helmet demanded money from a teller at a Capital One Bank in Waldorf, Md., about 10:40 a.m.
“He displayed a knife and said, ‘You know what this is, this is a robbery. I want all your money,’” said Diane Richardson of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
Outside, firefighter John Weyrich and his wife, another teller at the bank, were saying their goodbyes after he surprised her with flowers for her birthday.
After taking an undisclosed amount of money, the robber instructed a teller to escort him outside. When Weyrich saw them, he knew something was wrong.
“He came back out the door with a bank worker right up against his side, let her go at the door and made a bee line to his bike,” Weyrich said.
Weyrich got into his truck and tried to block the bank robber. After the robber got around him, Weyrich followed and called his wife on the phone. She was talking to the sheriff’s office.

“She obviously was concerned about from the time everything started,” Weyrich said. “She was actually on the other end of the phone when I was relaying where I was and what was going on. She was the one talking with the sheriff.”
The pursuit ended a few miles away, when the suspect crashed into a tree in the Hampshire neighborhood, which was surrounded by sheriff’s officers. The suspect was arrested, and the money and weapon were recovered.
“I was in the service for a while, the Marine Corps, so I guess it just comes second nature,” Weyrich explained. “When somebody hurts somebody, you tend to want to take care of it.”
