Heavy rain moved through the D.C. area Thursday afternoon, prompting a severe thunderstorm warning for D.C. and its suburbs.
The warning expired at 2:45 p.m.
The storms follow high heat and humidity that left the region feeling between 100 and 104 degrees.
During the storms, D.C. Fire and EMS was called to the 6100 block of Western Avenue for a report of wires down and on fire. D.C. Fire cordoned off the area and Pepco is working to restore service to customers.
Prince George's County firefighters said they treated who suffered a medical emergency when lightning struck nearby at Muirkirk and Odell Roads in Laurel. The patient is doing well.
After the front moves east of the metro area Thursday evening, lower humidity will sweep through from the west. That lower humidity will remain in place Friday into Saturday.
